    Climate and Equity Education: A Summer Institute for Learning and Teaching

    One-week (Sun 20 - Sat 26 July 2025), all-expenses-paid intensive on the beautiful coast of Maine.

    Want to spend a summer at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY conducting research with Cary Scientists? Apply now for our Research Experiences for Teachers program. More information can be found on our website. Paid travel and housing available for out-of-area teachers.     Cary BIORETS includes:

    • $8,800 stipend for full participation
    • Six weeks of collaborative summer research in the field of ecology
    • Four virtual school-year follow up sessions to support implementation of new curriculum
    • A culminating in-person, two-day writing workshop to support teachers in publishing their work
    • Mentorship by Cary scientists
    • Collaborative professional learning opportunities
    • Support to present at a regional conference or national conference

    Edward C. Roy Jr. Award For Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching

    The application deadline for the 2025 competition is January 17, 2025.

    $2500 prize for the winning teacher.

    Grant of up to $1500 to enable the recipient to attend the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) National Conference on March 26-29, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    This award honors the memory of Dr. Edward C. Roy Jr., a past president of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and a professor at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, and a recipient of both the Ian Campbell Medal and the Heroy Distinguished Service Award. He was a lifelong supporter of teachers and students of all ages and served for a number of years as chair of the AGI Education Advisory Committee.

    Event Dates: July 7-13, 2025
    Event location: Lake Michigan, starting and ending in Milwaukee, WI
    Intended Audience: 5th-12th grade teachers and non-formal educators

    Every summer fifteen educators are chosen from throughout the Great Lakes basin to participate in CGLL’s Shipboard Science Workshop. One participant aptly named this workshop “space camp for science teachers” because they experience being Great Lakes research scientists for a week while onboard the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) R/V Lake Guardian.

    NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program offers educators a unique opportunity to join NOAA scientists aboard an ocean research vessel as a member of the science team. Since 1990, more than 850 teachers have sailed on NOAA surveys monitoring our nation’s fisheries, measuring physical and chemical ocean trends, and charting unknown regions of the seafloor.

    Applications for 2024 Geoscience and STEM Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) are now being accepted.

    Application review begins May 1 and will continue until the program is full.

    Travel to Denver, CO is required. Up to $200 travel reimbursement. Complementary room and board provided during the program. 

    This program is specifically designed to support K-8 educators who are new to teaching earth sciences and are seeking to enhance their teaching skills and knowledge in this vital field.

    K-4 Program runs from July 7 - 10, 2024 Elementary School Level TLA

    5-8 runs from July 10 - 13, 2024 Middle School Level TLA
