FIVE REASONS TO GIVE

  1. Advocating the Need for ESS Opportunities: While employment in geoscience professions is on the rise (Ref), fewer students are declaring ESS majors (Ref). Why? Limited access to ESS classes in K-12 schools and a shortage of passionate, qualified teachers make it less likely for students to pursue ESS careers. 
      
  2. Promoting Equity in ESS: Students in inner cities and minority communities often lack access to ESS education and role models, contributing to a growing underrepresentation of minorities in geosciences and space sciences.

  3. Support teaching of ESS concepts and skills:  Authentic learning experiences in K-12 classrooms are vital for building ESS literacy and inspiring the next generation of Earth and space science leaders. 

  4. Cultivate Understanding of ESS Values: ESS is sometimes perceived as less rigorous or less critical than other sciences, despite its direct relevance to pressing global issues like climate change, natural resource management, and sustainability.

  5. Fostering Earth Stewardship: From resource management and climate change to pollution control and earthquake mitigation, there’s a pressing need to improve public understanding of these complex issues.
