Earth Science Week 2018 Collection
In 2018, Earth Science Week was October 14th to 20th and had as its theme, "Earth as Inspiration." Every Day of Earth Science Week, sponsored by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI), has a special focus. NESTA is highlighting a key resource or resource collection each day. On Saturday, October 20, 2018 join us for an end-of-week, virtual, celebration sharing what NESTA has done this past year and find out how you can become more involved in NESTA.

Focus Days
Sunday, October 14: International Earthcache DayIf you are an Earth Science teacher, you probably enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. Geocaching offers you and your students this opportunity as well as the excitement of using some navigation skills to locate some hidden "treasures" in your own neighborhood. Check out this resource for a list of what's in your area.
Monday, October 15: Earth Science Literacy DayScience literacy is important for today's society, especially since our environment is changing in many ways. This resource provides the literacy principles that are important in each of the major divisions of Earth Science.
Tuesday, October 16: No Child Left Inside Day and Earth Observation DayIn today's world too many people have no connection with nature like our ancestors had. The NASA GLOBE Cloud Protocol gives you and your students the excuse to get out of the classroom and connect with your surroundings and best of all, it is free and requires no traveling! NASA needs your help collecting data to better understand the different types of clouds and the effects they have on our Earth's climate. Satellites only see the top of the clouds while you and your students can see the bottom. Participate and submit cloud observations through the GLOBE Observer app. Be sure to check out the Cloud Training resources.
Wednesday, October 17: National Fossil DayFossils provide a valuable record of the plant and animal life and environmental conditions from millions, even billions of years ago. In this lesson from PBS LearningMedia, students create their own fossils, and then use multimedia resources to learn how real fossils form and what scientists can learn from them.
Thursday, October 18: Geoscience for Everyone DayEarth is calling......will you answer? Find out what geoscientists do and share the career opportunities that are available with your students.
Friday, October 19: Geologic Map DaySince the 1880's the USGS and its partners, the State Geological Surveys, have been producing high quality, standardized geologic maps of the Nation. Check out the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB), which is charged with building a National archive of these maps and related geoscience reports.
Saturday, October 20: International Archaeology DayArchaeology provides us with information about the cultural and technological aspects of our ancestors. This collection of educational resources from the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) is great for introducing your students to this important branch of science. Be sure to explore the lessons contributed by K-12 teachers as well as those developed by SAA. |
