Earth Science All Around: Using 360 Imagery To Support Place-based Instruction

This share-a-thon presentation provides a mini-intro to place-based teaching in the geosciences, as well as a tour of the Earth Science All Around website that is jam packed with resources, lesson materials, and simulations that are ready for you to use today. Virtual field trips, 360 images, Google Earth and place-based geoscience education approaches support 3-dimensional teaching and learning as called for in the Framework for K-12 Science Education. These can form the basis for rich, independent (including "learn from home") lessons for students.

IF THEN STEM Ambassadors

Broadening participation in the geosciences, and STEM fields more generally, is an ongoing priority in geoscience education. To promote this goal, the Lyda Hill Philanthropies in partnership with the AAAS and others have started the IF/THEN Initiative to highlight the professional lives of a diverse group of women in STEM fields. The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) has developed sets of curriculum-related activities focusing on four of those STEM professionals. These activities involve students in reflecting on their own images of STEM professionals and their work, engaging with the "STEM Timelines" of the profiled scientists and relating those to events in their own lives, and exploring how the work of STEM professionals is significant in their lives and communities.

Schinske et al. (2017) designed the Scientist Spotlight homework assignments to shift students' stereotypes of scientists and to increase diverse representations and enhance science identity.
