2011 NESTA Field Trip - A Tour of Subsidence, Jurassic Cherts, Active Faults, and an Antiform!

The 2011 NESTA Field Trip, which will take place on March 9, will begin at 8 am from the front of the Marriott Marquis San Francisco, and conclude about 5 pm back at the hotel. The field trip will begin with a walking tour, and then continue by bus for the rest of the day. We will stop for lunch in the East Bay area. Participants should be comfortable on a walking tour for about an hour in a generally flat area. Price includes lunch and a printed field guide. The field trip will include:

  • Walking tour of subsidence area in San Francisco (artificial fill in Old Mission Bay Marsh area, liquefaction damage in 1906, 1989, and continuing subsidence)
  • Drive to Randall Museum, where we will have a great and unique view of the City, as well as have the chance to see an outcrop of folded and faulted bedded Jurassic cherts
  • Lunch in the East Bay
  • Cross Bay Bridge and visit the Hayward Fault in Hayward, the most urbanized active fault in the US -- stand on both sides of the fault, see surface rupture, offset curbs, deformed buildings
  • Drive to and up Mount Diablo, and go back in time from the present to the Jurassic as we climb this antiform
  • Depart Mount Diablo about 3:30 to get back to the hotel near 5 pm
